What is a great portrait?

What is a great portrait? We all know what we like but why, or what makes it so, is hard to pinpoint.

Lea and Lee - the happiest day of their lives

OK they look fantastic – but in this wedding portrait of Lea and Lee it’s the matching smiles that bring it to life and make it one of my favorites.

Big green eyes

Tamiya eating the flower

In this one it’s definitely the eyes that make it special.

Beautiful blonde

Jamie-Lee just reached for the studio props - the pose came automatically.

Some people are naturals in front of a camera.  Jamie put on the hat and scarf without prompting and the pose makes the shot.

Same hat - no pose

James adjusted the hat that he just picked up and voila the moment was immortalized.  I remember being taught to catch people doing something.

props for great portraits

The white boxes are usually for sitting or standing on.

I love it when people start playing in the studio.  No smile – but what a great pose.

The family portrait shoot was over the kids headed for the swings and the memory was made

Bottom line: a great portrait is a loved image that brings a moment in time back to you.

Jessica and Anthony

Jessica and Anthony with the bridal party in the background.

Willow Pond was an idyllic location for Jessica and Anthony's wedding, bridal shoot and reception.

This week Jessica and I met to plan their wedding album.  It was excellent to remember and review their special day.

First married kiss

A beautiful moment in a beautiful location. Despite the abundant beauty of the location with a dam, a pagola, a large lake and a vineyard; no one warned us about the flies !! Over 200 flies resting on the bride and groom or flying around have been edited out of this photograph. At ‘As You Like Photography’ we pay attention to all those small annoying details to produce the best photos we can – As You Like.

We can skillfully apply whatever special effects or editing techniques you want to your precious photos.

Vineyard

Of course we pay special attention not only to the bride and groom and the bridal party but we take care of all your guests, family and friends too.

All of Us

And because we work with two photographers, we are able to record all the spontaneous and informal moments that add to the joy of your wedding day.

Why have a second photographer at a wedding?

Uncle Tom

Initially some clients ask why we prefer to have a second photographer at the weddings we cover; the answer is fairly simple – it’s too hard for one person to be in two places at once !!

Usually one photographer will follow the Bride and Groom throughout the day whereas the second photographer can focus on getting some lovely pictures of the family and friends of the bridal couple – the people with whom the couple have chosen to share their day.

These photos of the family and friends of the couple are very important. We are often told by our clients that when they finally have the time to sit down together and reflect back on the wedding day, the photos of their friends are among the most enjoyable of all the photos to look at. These photos can tell a story that the bridal couple did not see because so often their day is too busy to spend time with each and every ne of their guests.

All dressed up

While one photographer might be at the front where the ceremony or exchange of vows is taking place, it can be lovely to have a different view of the events, the following shot was taken as the bride walked past the guests on her way down the aisle. A simple but strong reminder of how beautiful Jen looked on this, her most magical of days.

All that glitters

These shots were all taken when I was the second photographer at the wedding for Rob and Jen. It was a pleasure to be there and to be able to focus on recorded those informal and wonderful moments throughout the day. I particularly loved this moment shared between Jen, her mum and the bridesmaid.

Who farted?
